A Toast to the Roasters

By: Stephen McCollum

How far are you willing to go for a really good cup of coffee?

Hartford City native Travis Stroud didn’t even like coffee. That is until he found himself in Indonesia with the U.S. Army. When he tasted fresh roasted coffee that seemed it had almost been pumped from the tree into the cup, he was sold.

Well, thanks to Travis and his sister, Mindy Harvey, you won’t have to go any farther than 1603 N. Walnut Street to Who’s Your Coffee, which will stage its grand opening Saturday, November 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A series of giveaways will spice up the day.

Mindy Harvey and Travis Stroud prepare for grand opening of Who’s Your Coffee.

After his close encounter with the fresh, specialty roasted Indonesian coffee, Travis came home with a newfound taste but discovered it was going to be harder than he thought to duplicate  stateside.

So he teamed up with Mindy to buy a home coffee bean roaster. That worked for a while, but before they knew it Travis describes “a leap of faith.” They invested in a six kilogram commercial roaster. That leap landed them in Minneapolis, MN where they completed the Specialty Coffee Association’s roasting course.

In May of this year, they began selling freshly roasted, organic, fair trade coffee online, featuring single origin beans from Congo, Rwanda, and Colombia. You can still buy coffee online at www.whosyourcoffee.com

“That was going to be it,” said Travis, “but some friends started urging us to open a cafe because they didn’t want to have to drive as much as 20-30 minutes to the nearest Starbucks. So that’s what motivated us to launch Who’s Your Coffee—with the goal of giving something back to the community that has given so much to us.”

The cafe’s hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There is a drive-through window option for those who need their caffeine on the go.

Top off your coffee with a selection of pastries and other menu items.

“We are excited to bring delicious coffee and healthy foods to our city,” said Mindy. “But coffee isn’t our end goal. Our ambition is to bring people together, brighten their days, and build new relationships. It’s all about serving others.”

Mindy Harvey, Barbara Cowgill, and Emily Hunt are ready to serve you.

Although Travis now lives in Louisville, KY and works at GE Appliances, he will be handling the financial side of the business, while Mindy concentrates on the day-to-day operations.

Well, Hoosiers, Who’s Your (newest) Coffee (roaster)?
