Coffee Culture

By: Kathryn Fenstermacher

Coffee date, anyone? Hartford City is a bit of a hidden gem for those who appreciate a good cup of joe, as it’s home to not one, not two, but three local cafes. If you want to try something different from the major coffee shop chains, stop by one (or all!) of these spots for a caffeine buzz or a tasty treat that will satisfy your cravings while serving up some major small-town charm.

Read on for our round-up of Hartford City’s local cafes, listed in alphabetical order.

Common Grounds

Across from the towering Blackford County Courthouse, nestled among shops and offices in the heart of downtown, caffeine-seekers will find a welcome oasis at Common Grounds. The cafe sprang up in what was the historic Hoover-Needler furniture store, and still features a second-story atrium where customers can sit for a birds-eye view of the eclectic decor below. Each seating area is like a vignette, from velvet tufted sofas and doilies of a bygone era to tables fashioned from old radiators and wooden doors. Burlap coffee sacks hang from the ceiling as a nod to the international blends that are featured daily at the self-serve drip coffee station. Common Grounds offers an array of specialty drinks as well as fresh baked pastries and a rotating food menu. Daytime hours are ideal for early risers and local professionals in need of a refreshing mid-day coffee break. While you’re there, don’t skip the loo – their indoor “outhouse” is an experience in itself! Whether you’re shopping at the local boutiques or driving through on Route 3, stop in to Common Grounds on 119 W Washington for a relaxing escape with that neighborhood feel.

Deja Brew Espresso Bar

Deja Brew is the newest cafe in town, but they’ve already proven their worth with an award winning roast from The Caffeinery, which received a Bronze Medal from the 2022 Golden Bean North America coffee roasting competition. Located in the historic Johnston Glass Beveling Plant, a charming brick structure built in the 1800s, their location on Route 26 makes them a convenient stop for out-of-town travelers who are passing through, or for local university students looking for a change of scenery. Plenty of seating, off-street parking, and long hours makes this cafe a great choice for business meetings, study groups, and friendly gatherings alike. Their outdoor patio area features a pergola constructed from antique timber beams to honor the historic nature of the building. Deja Brew offers a full menu of classic and specialty coffee and espresso drinks as well as a breakfast and lunch food menu, including their house-made biscuits and gravy. Conjure up warm memories when you step into Deja Brew on 1000 W Washington St.

Who’s Your Coffee Roastery

Who’s Your Coffee (WYC) caters to even the busiest schedule: this cafe offers convenient drive-through for caffeine on the go, but also features a sweet dining room where guests can sit and sip while eyeing their colorful case of energy drinks and kombucha. WYC roasts the high quality, fair-trade, organic coffee beans that go directly into their specialty drinks, and also sells them by the bag. But if you glance at their Instagram, you’ll realize that they are equally famous for their gourmet lunch specials and seasonal treats. WYC sources many of their ingredients from local vendors, and it’s part of their business culture to foster mutual support and community among the region’s small businesses. So think about it as a win-win the next time you grab a snack at WYC on 1603 N Walnut – it’s just one more good reason to treat yourself!
