Fall Festivities in Full Swing

By: Contessa Hussong

With the temperature falling as quickly as the autumn leaves, October has come in full swing, and with it, all the darkly delightful traditions of a Blackford County Halloween.

From Hartford City’s Halloween weekend events to pumpkin picking trailers on the north end of the county, here are a few of the best sweet-and-spooky ways to spend the Halloween season this year.

Whether you’re a fan of cinnamon-spiced pumpkin seeds or simply carving some innovative Jack o’ Lantern designs, there are plenty of pumpkin-picking opportunities in Blackford, beginning in the northern end of the county.

A city dedicated to saying “yes” to the best things in life, Montpelier’s autumn offerings include Chelsea Huffman’s pumpkin trailer, a pop-up business that travels around the northern Blackford area. Mascoted by Roscoe, the Huffmans’ dog, as well as Huffman’s daughters and Huffman herself, the pumpkin trailer’s consistent five dollar deal is a great way to decorate on a budget.

Turning toward the southern end of the county, Spitler Gardens is another great place to pumpkin shop. With both mini and full-size pumpkins available, this little roadside shop also offers cut flowers, eggs and gourds. The stand can be found at 1570 S 100 W in Hartford City, but provides bouquet pick-up services for those wishing to fill flowers for an event as well.

Haunting the Streets with the Whole Family

Look no further for a fall-themed adventure! Trick-or-Treat will take place across the county October 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. but there are plenty of other events to visit before the month comes to a close.

On Friday, Oct. 27, the Hartford City Arts Council is hosting its annual “Spooktacular” Halloween celebration, with featured events taking place throughout the city. The Arts Council’s Trunk-or-Treat will begin setup at 6 p.m., and volunteers are encouraged to decorate their vehicles to create a sweetly spooky time for Blackford’s youngest ghouls and goblins.

In addition, the Spooktacular will feature light food and drinks, arts and crafts and music run by Brian Ross, a Hartford native and longtime member of the JAMZ Entertainment Group.

The Halloween celebration will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and is the perfect way to set the stage for the Chamber of Commerce’s Halloween Town and Parade, taking place the following day, Oct. 28.

An opportunity to support local businesses, the Halloween Town event will not only highlight Blackford County vendors, but will host a scarecrow contest and a variety of food trucks and other vendors.

Monster Mashes for 21+

For those looking for a more adult way to spend the Halloween season, SuAnn Parks of Suzy Q Paints is hosting a paint part on Oct.19 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. A $35 entrance fee is charged, but the night is sure to be an artistic way to start off a weekend of Halloween events at Tyler and Nick’s Lounge.

On Oct. 25, the lounge will host Steve and Shelby Crouse’s Karaoke Costume Party, where first and second place will win a small prize, including a trophy for the winner. Dress to impress for this fall event!

Finally, on Oct. 31, Blackford adults won’t need to feel left out of the trick-or-treating festivities. Michael Duquette will be performing live at the lounge for an all-adults evening on Halloween night. While prizes will not be offered for this event, attendees are still welcome to dress up or come as they are, making the atmosphere as spooky or sophisticated as they choose.

Sweet Treats (No Trick Required!)

Speaking of ways to fill a monstrous appetite, several Blackford County cafes are offering up themed drinks and snacks this fall season!

Who’s Your Coffee Roastery in Hartford City has created their first original flavored coffee: a pumpkin-spiced medium-roasted blend. This small pop-up shop is open only one day a week, but the returning customers have proved it’s worth the wait to go.

Looking for grounds only? Visit the Hartford City Meat and Deli store from 2 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday to purchase Who’s Your Coffee’s signature roasted coffee grounds.

In Montpelier, the newly-opened Nutrition Cafe has also pulled a trick out of its sleeve, appearing in the community as if from out of thin air. Housed within the Faith and Frills boutique and salon, this cafe developed an October-only menu complete with a Monster Mash loaded tea made from green apple, blue raspberry, and cherry flavors.

Other offerings include a Pennywise drink with a classic cherry-grape pairing, a mango, blue raspberry and passion fruit Boo Berry tea, and custom options for those hoping to concoct their own witch’s brew.

Meanwhile, Hartford City’s own ice cream shop, The Tasty Spoon, has launched its fall menu items as well, from a cream cheese pumpkin danish sundae to pumpkin pie shakes. With the last day of its season approaching fast on October 22, now is the time to go in and get a taste of this sweet deal.

Finally, combining sweet treats and sweeter crafts, Simply Sweet and Rustic has recently restocked their autumn inventory. From children’s Halloween-themed shirts and sweaters to a variety of candies that will leave spirits young and old hungry for more, this Montpelier shop is a must-stop delight that’s key for any Blackford Halloween tour.

With a full month of events coming just around the corner, Blackford County has something for everyone — from arts and music to tricks and treats. Join the county in celebrating the fall season this year, and enjoy the community atmosphere that runs down the spine of every Blackford event.
